About Bodies of Water

Created by the Ensemble
Directed by Shiela Daniels and Porscha Shaw

In the first moments of Twelfth Night, Viola washes up on the Illyrian shore, bereft over her brother’s death, the embodiment of grief. Even as the play takes its comedic turn, the body—disguised, desirous, or familial—remains a potent theme in the play. From these seeds, directors Porscha Shaw and Sheila Daniels began by asking, during the double pandemics of COVID-19 and police brutality, what does it mean to live in a body? In a culture that refrains from discussing bodies except as commodities, what does it mean to talk about bodies? To see bodies? To care for bodies? To harm bodies? To heal bodies? The generative ensemble of Bodies of Water offers a scrapbook of responses to these questions, based on their own experiences as well as first-person interviews. This is a play that asks us each to consider, ultimately, how we can celebrate our own bodies and each other’s bodies.

Run Time: 90 minutes

Content Advisory: This Video Scrapbook explores the ways that bodies have been affected by the events of 2020 and 2021, by conversations about identity and systemic isms of all kinds.
